Ianya kini sudah ditutup dan sudah menjadi sebuah tasik yang tercemar. Pada tahun 1979 seorang petani menemui ketulan emas di ladang milik beliau. Setelah menggaji seorang ahli geologi untuk melakukan survey, mereka mendapati kawasan Serra Pelada mempunyai simpanan emas yang besar.<\/p>\n<p>Apabila berita ini tersebar ratusan ribu orang mula membanjiri kawasan ini untuk melombong emas. Bongkah emas terbesar yang ditemui di sini adalah seberat 6.8 kilogram. Pernah suatu ketika seramai 100 000 orang dikatakan melombong emas disini. Teknik pelombongan mereka adalah primatif dan merbahaya kerana menggunakan merkuri.
